3. About KEWI
KEWI Learning Centre is a private, non-regulated educational provider with over 30 years of experience in early and primary education. Our legacy includes international exposure and a proven track record in teaching children whose first language is not English.
While KEWI is not affiliated with any religious organisation, we uphold the family in the highest regard. We believe that strong family values are the foundation for healthy emotional development of children, responsible citizenship, and the aptitude to continue learning throughout their lives. Our curriculum is designed to enhance each child’s individual identity while fostering respect for others and the world around them.
3.1 Our Educational Values
- Cultural Diversity: We value and integrate cultural diversity across all subjects. Learning materials reflect a variety of cultures and perspectives to promote understanding of ourselves and each other throughout the world.
- Holistic Development: KEWI’s approach includes not only academic knowledge but also social, emotional, and ethical learning. We encourage children to:
- Care for themselves — building self-worth, self-awareness, and healthy habits.
- Value others — showing kindness, empathy, and respect. But be bold enough to speak out when they feel their rights are being violated.
- Respect animals and nature — recognising the importance of plants, animals, and ecosystems in sustaining life.
- Protect the Earth — understanding their role in environmental stewardship, including reducing pollution and caring for our water bodies.
3.2 Learning Through Responsibility
Through guided studies and family-led activities, our curriculum supports:
- Environmental awareness (e.g. reducing waste, reusing materials, respecting wildlife)
- Appreciation for natural resources, plants, and clean water as gifts that must be preserved
- Conversations around personal responsibility, emotional intelligence, and decision-making
At KEWI, we nurture intelligent, confident, and conscientious learners who understand their value in the world and their responsibility to care for it. Our goal is to support each family in raising children who are not only knowledgeable but also kind, thoughtful, courageous, independent thinker and deeply aware of the world they live in.

8. Learning Environment Policy
At KEWI Learning Centre, we believe that a well-prepared and nurturing home learning space is vital for a child’s success. Parents and guardians play a key role in supporting and guiding children throughout their learning experience. The following policy outlines our expectations and recommendations for establishing a positive and productive educational environment at home.
8.1 The Learning Space
- Quiet and Focused Environment: The learning space should be free from noise, distractions, and unnecessary interruptions. Children should be allowed to focus without being disturbed during lesson time.
- Visibility and Supervision: Parents or guardians must ensure that the child is always within sight while learning. This promotes safety, focus, and accountability.
- Bright and Cheerful Atmosphere: The learning space should be well-lit and welcoming. A cheerful environment promotes enthusiasm and motivation.
- Exhibition of Work: Displaying a selection of the child’s completed work encourages pride and a sense of achievement. A simple pinboard or wall space can be used to celebrate their efforts.
- Clean and Organised Workstation: The child’s workstation should be kept tidy, clean and orderly at all times. It must be equipped with all the necessary materials for the lesson, such as pencils, pens, paper, rulers, or other subject-specific tools.
- Tidy-Up Routine: After each session, children should be given time and encouragement to tidy up their area and return all materials to their proper place. This fosters responsibility and organisation.
8.2 Role of Parents and Guardians
- Active Engagement: Parents should take time to discuss lessons with their child both before and after learning sessions. This supports understanding and reflection.
- Encouragement and Praise:
- Children should be encouraged to do their best and take pride in neat, thoughtful writing, drawing and presentation.
- Praise should be given for effort, not just achievement. Motivation grows when children feel their hard work is noticed.
- When lessons feel challenging, offer gentle encouragement and support to build resilience and confidence.
- Timing of Lessons: Each KEWI lesson is designed to last between 45 minutes and one hour. Please ensure the child has adequate physical breaks between sessions, drink water and is not overburdened. Some children finish faster than others.
8.3 Learning Beyond the Screen
KEWI encourages families to integrate real-world learning experiences into everyday life:
- Local Excursions: Visits to museums, nature reserves, historical sites, science institutions, building sites, or markets can enhance learning and provide real-life context to academic concepts.
- Family Involvement Activities:
- Involve children in family decision-making such as gardening, planning meals, redecorating, or creating shopping lists.
- Encourage children to help understand how ingredients, tools, and materials are used in everyday life.
- Environmental Awareness: Teach children the importance of caring for the environment and understanding how a clean, healthy world supports well-being and longevity.
8.4 Emotional and Social Development
- Encourage Expression:
- Children should be taught to speak up for themselves respectfully, especially when they feel uncertain or unsatisfied with something.
- Discussions should be open, kind, and constructive, promoting a positive home learning culture.
- Build a Relationship of Trust:
- A close and communicative relationship between parent and child fosters confidence, curiosity, and emotional security.
- Regular conversations, shared experiences, and collaborative problem-solving strengthen this bond.
KEWI Learning Centre believes that education thrives in partnership with families. When children are supported emotionally, intellectually, and practically, they are more likely to enjoy learning and reach their fullest potential.
9. Marking and Feedback Policy
At KEWI Learning Centre, we believe that marking is not just about correction, but about developing self-awareness, responsibility, and pride in one’s work. We encourage a marking system that is interactive, positive, and helps the child reflect on their learning journey.
9.1 Joint Marking Approach
- Collaborative Marking: Marking should be a shared process between the parent/guardian and the child. Reviewing the child’s work together encourages dialogue, reflection, and better understanding.
- Colour-Coding System: Parents and children should agree on a colour system for marking that is both fun and meaningful. For example:
- ✅ Green – Great effort! Work is on track and shows clear understanding.
- 🔁 Orange/Yellow – Let’s take another look. This may need review due to small errors or lack of focus.
- ❌ Red – Off track or significant misunderstanding; revisit with guidance.
Parents are free to adjust colours based on the child’s preferences to make the process more engaging.
9.2 Purpose of Marking
- Support, Not Shame: The marking system is designed to guide and encourage, not criticise. It helps children recognise both their strengths and areas for growth.
- Spotting Patterns: Mistakes should be used to help children identify recurring issues, such as rushing, skipping instructions, or misreading a question.
- Discussion Over Correction:
- Parents should ask guiding questions rather than giving the answer immediately.
- Encourage the child to spot and correct their own mistakes with support.
9.3 Encouraging Self-Monitoring
- Children should be supported to:
- Check their work independently before submitting or declaring it complete.
- Understand the value of slowing down and reviewing their answers carefully.
- Feel confident in asking for help where they don’t understand something.
9.4 Celebrating Growth
- Celebrate improvements, especially when a child corrects their own work or learns from feedback.
- Highlight not just correct answers but neat handwriting, thoughtful answers, and persistence.
KEWI encourages marking to be a gentle and rewarding moment — one where the child feels seen, heard, and guided toward independent, thoughtful learning.
10. Reading and Literacy Development Policy
At KEWI Learning Centre, we understand that reading is the foundation of lifelong learning, communication, and emotional development. Our approach to reading goes beyond decoding words — we encourage children to interact with texts, think critically, and express themselves confidently.
10.1 Types of Reading Encouraged
- Reading Aloud:
- Children should be encouraged to read aloud regularly to strengthen pronunciation, fluency, and confidence.
- Parents and guardians should listen attentively, offer praise, and model expressive reading where needed.
- Silent (Independent) Reading:
- Children should also have opportunities for quiet, independent reading, where they can focus, reflect, and immerse themselves in the material at their own pace.
10.2 Discussion and Language Support
- Bilingual Discussions:
- Children are encouraged to discuss and ask questions about the text in both English and their local/native language.
- This supports comprehension, critical thinking, and bridges cultural and linguistic identity with learning.
- Parental Role:
- Parents should invite questions about the story and discuss the meaning, message, and moral of the text.
- Translating or summarising parts of the story in the child’s first language is welcome when it aids understanding.
10.3 Expressive and Active Reading
KEWI encourages children to connect emotionally and intellectually with what they read by:
- Using intonation and expression to reflect tone, emotion, and character voice.
- Acting out scenes or reading dialogue dramatically to engage with characters and plot.
- Demonstrating empathy by discussing how characters may feel and why.
- Applying reasoning skills and asking “What would you do?” or “Why do you think this happened?”
10.4 Reading for Depth and Growth
- Elevating Reading Choices: Children should be introduced to texts that challenge their thinking, expose them to new ideas, and reflect positive values, such as fairness, courage, self-control, and responsibility.
- Problem Solving Through Texts:
- Encourage children to identify dilemmas in stories and propose solutions.
- Use stories to spark conversation around real-life decision-making and critical thought.
10.5 Creating a Reading Culture at Home
- Designate a comfortable, quiet reading area in the home.
- Let your child see you reading and enjoying books.
- Encourage daily reading, even for just 15–20 minutes, and vary the material — from storybooks to poems, informational texts, or cultural tales.
KEWI believes that reading is not only a skill, but a doorway to empathy, self-expression, and imagination. By fostering a love for reading in both English and the child’s mother tongue, we build confident, curious learners who connect their world with the world of others.
11. Lesson Timing and Preparation Policy
KEWI Learning Centre is committed to providing structured, engaging, and age-appropriate lessons that encourage independent thinking, creativity, and consistency in learning habits. To support this, clear routines and expectations around lesson times and preparation are essential.
11.1 Lesson Duration
- Each lesson is designed to last between 45 minutes to 1 hour.
- This includes time for:
- Setting up the workspace and gathering required materials.
- Completing the main lesson activities (interactive, written, or practical).
- Winding down, which includes reviewing the session, tidying up, and putting materials away.
- This includes time for:
- The learning schedule should be flexible enough to allow children to complete tasks at their own pace while encouraging punctuality and responsibility.
11.2 Setup and Tidy-Up Routines
- Children should be guided to:
- Gather their materials before the lesson begins.
- Ensure their workspace is neat, equipped, and ready for learning.
- Tidy up and return equipment or supplies to the appropriate place at the end of each session.
- This routine builds organisational habits and reinforces the importance of respecting learning tools and space.
11.3 Support and Supervision
- Parental or Guardian Involvement:
- Parents or guardians are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s learning, providing encouragement, discussing lessons, and assisting where needed.
- If time or circumstances prevent active participation, KEWI supports the use of a qualified tutor to help supervise and assist with lessons.
- Parents should remain informed about the learning content and continue to support their child’s progress even when a tutor is used.
11.4 Term Preparation
- KEWI Newsletter Briefing:
- Prior to the start of each new term, KEWI will issue a newsletter briefing to all parents or guardians.
- This will include:
- A list of learning materials and equipment needed for the term.
- Any specific themes, projects, or areas of focus for upcoming lessons.
- Suggestions for additional reading or real-life learning opportunities aligned with the term’s content.
- This ensures that families can prepare in advance, avoid last-minute disruptions, and help their child begin each term confidently.
12. Consultation
During the first to second term, you will receive a short questionnaire to fill in. It will be followed by a free consultation. Dates and times are to be arranged and agreed. The purpose of having a consultation is to ensure that our services are meeting our clients demand. The consultation would be held for parent/guardian and their child/children. The duration about 10 minutes.
